Meet Our New Drafting Team Lead: Dutch Leistner

Joining Inertia four years ago, as a Structural Drafter, Dutch has now been appointed a Drafting Team Lead of the Buildings Group.

Dutch’s Story

Early on I went through a phase of not really knowing what I wanted to do after finishing school, something I feel is common for a lot of people. After working at Woolworths for a while, I decided it wasn’t for me and it was time to get pro-active about my life and career. I started studying an associate degree at Southbank TAFE, remembering the enjoyment and knowledge that technical drawing and engineering science gave me in high school. The idea was to probably become an engineer, however whilst studying the degree I applied to an ad in the paper (old school!) after recommendation from a friend’s mum who was also looking for a career change. I applied for Bornhorst and Ward as they were looking for a Cadet Drafter and managed to snag the job!

I started at Inertia in 2020 on contract after a tumultuous time through Covid, shortly after, I got offered a permanent position and haven’t looked back since. I’ve been given the reins on numerous projects for different teams, eventually landing in the residential team as I wanted to explore site works more. I have now been promoted to Team Lead, a position I would not have pictured for myself two years ago!

Inertia has not only given me the opportunity to achieve my goals, the company and its amazing people have also supported me and fostered my talents and abilities. I was keen on getting into site work and the nitty gritty to hone my engineering and building knowledge and Inertia is where I been given the time and trust to achieve this. Getting out on site, being provided mentorship and allowed the opportunity to create and provide site reports.

I am driven to continue achieving excellence everyday by my family. My partner Samiee and our new addition Hansi are my biggest supporters. I believe that having things done in an efficient manner at work is so important to allow me to maximise the time I spend with my family. I also just genuinely like to help people and find solutions to problems and improve the way we document and draft.

I love that Inertia has a young and vibrant culture and a lot of people at a similar life stage to myself. It makes for great lunch table conversations and people who are genuinely keen to have a chat or catch up for a Friday lunch.

I appreciate Inertia and all its people, and the unlimited opportunities provided to help us all achieve success.
