Inertia Director Saddles Up for A Good Cause

This April Inertia’s Scott Clements will be climbing into the saddle and tackling a 200km ride from the Gold Coast Spit to Byron Bay, but with one difference the ride is totally on sand.

Along with a group of good mates, this is the latest in a series of ANZAC Day Challenges designed to raise much needed funds for the Stillbirth Foundation.

Scott explains the history of the challenges “My brother in law-in law, Jon started an annual ANZAC Day challenge a few years ago.  The challenge has taken in kayaking up the Tweed River, hiking/running the trails of the Gold Coast Hinterland and riding the mountains of the Scenic Rim.“

“Since then momentum has grown for the event we have made the event something greater than a personal/team challenge and raise money for charity.  This year is our biggest year so far with 20 of us taking 2 days to ride 200km of the east coast on Strive Fatbikes.”

“Our chosen charity is one that is particularly close to my heart. Emma and I have 3 beautiful boys – Henry, Charlie and Joey, however only a few know that we’ve actually had 4 boys.  In 2011, Henry was only 2 years old, and Emma was pregnant with our second, already named Louie.  Everything was going according to plan, with every check-up coming in perfectly.“

“Emma was 37 weeks with Louie as she went for her final check-up leading up to the birth.  Our world was turned on its head as the doctor could not find his heart beat.  Something had gone seriously wrong, and less than 3 hours later after a C section we were holding our Stillborn child, perfectly formed with no indication of any problems.  Still do this day we do not know what caused it to occur.”

“We can’t change what happened to us, and aren’t likely to ever know what when wrong, but we can have an impact by raising money for the Stillbirth Foundation who help fund both research in this area and support of families that have been through the same.“

“This is where you come in – donations!  The guys have come up with some great branding for our event, and some innovative ways to donate to the cause.”

What is Stillbirth?

Stillbirth is defined as when a baby dies before or during birth between 20 weeks and full term, and there are some alarming statistics:

  • Six stillborn babies each day in Australia
  • 1 in 135 births are stillbirth, and the cause is never known
  • For every 1 baby that dies of SIDS, there is 35 stillborn
  • In 2 decades the rate has not declined with any significance
