Designing a Connected City – Part 6

In the final video of the series, Scott Clements and Nader Ibrahim (O2LA) walk through the vision of Woolloongabba Village. They begin by retracing the big moves: understanding how Vulture Street, Stanley Street, Main Street, and the Riverside Expressway currently dissect the suburb, and how rethinking these corridors becomes the catalyst for everything that follows.

One of the strongest opportunities is the Woolloongabba to South Bank connection. At less than a kilometre apart, the two precincts are already neighbours – they just need the right infrastructure to feel genuinely linked. Where South Bank thrives as a cultural destination, Woolloongabba has the chance to layer tourism, residential living, and everyday activity around the future arena.

As they review the design, several key themes emerge:
– More green space and an Eastern Green that anchors the precinct.
– A connected public realm supported by land bridges that stitch movement paths together.
– Built form that feels welcoming and human with 4–5 storey buildings framing the streets and public spaces.
– Opportunities to repurpose existing assets, strengthening the cultural spine.
– A new Stanley Street experience that feels intimate, comfortable, and local.

The design thinking centres on one question: How do we elevate what already exists? By leveraging what Woolloongabba already has, the precinct can grow into a vibrant village heart. “This is a once-in-a-100-year opportunity. We’ve got one really good shot at it, and that’s now.”
