7-Eleven Service Station, Gympie Road

By their nature, petrol stations are very complex to design and engineer, with a range of extremely strict controls and regulations in place for the fuel tank design, engineering and management, and this project was no exception.

We worked closely with Multi Span Australia under a design and construction contract to make the design as cost-effective and efficient as possible while adhering to the necessary regulations. A good example would be how we were able to work with Multi Span’s structural team to coordinate having the detention tank as forming part of the acoustic wall.

A key element of this project was working to manage stakeholders effectively, with Queensland Rail, Department of Transport and Main Road and Brisbane City Council all having an interest in the site. Led by Sarfaraaz Sacur, the project team liaised with all groups to ensure all stakeholders requirements were met and that necessary approvals were obtained in a timely fashion.

The site restraints for the management of stormwater were a major challenge for this project, but Inertia’s civil engineering team worked hard to find the best possible solutions to enable the project to progress seamlessly. Additionally, 7-Eleven has its own standards for all aspects of their service stations, which kept us working as hard as we could to satisfy them as well as the council’s guidelines.

Inertia Engineering worked on this project from the DA stage right through to the OPW and construction and involved designing a new service station to replace one that no longer met new standards. This project is now in the post-construction phase, with hopes that this new station will soon be open for travellers along Gympie road to fuel up – and maybe grab a doughnut or two!
